SDG&E JANUARY MESSAGE: Warm Up Wisely: Simple Steps to Cut Energy Costs this Winter
Winter is here, and with it comes cooler days and longer nights. Whether you’re in San Diego County or southern Orange County, staying comfortable while managing energy use may be easier than you think. Small changes can help you save energy and keep your home cozy all season long. Here’s how:
Shift your energy use: Take advantage of lower-cost energy times by running major appliances like your dishwasher or washing machine before 4 p.m. or after 9 p.m.
Layer up: Reach for sweaters, blankets and cozy socks before turning up the heat. Staying warm naturally reduces the need to run your heater.
Inspect your windows: Drafty windows? Seal them with weatherstripping or apply insulating film to keep the chilly air out and your warm air in.
Switch to LED bulbs: Lighting your home for longer nights? LEDs use up to 75% less energy than traditional bulbs and last much longer.
Use a programmable thermostat: Set it to lower the temperature when you’re away or sleeping. A few degrees can make a big impact on your bill.
Reduce heat loss from your water heater: Wrap your water heater in an insulating blanket to retain heat. Lower the temperature to 120°F to save even more energy.
Reverse ceiling fans:Set fans to rotate clockwise on low speed during the winter. This will push warm air from the ceiling back down into your living space.
Close doors to unused rooms: If you’re only using part of your home, keep doors closed to limit the space you need to heat.
Use a draft stopper: Place draft stoppers at the base of doors leading outside or to unheated areas to keep cold air at bay.
Open curtains during the day: Let the sun naturally warm your home by opening curtains on south-facing windows during the day. Close them at night to keep the heat in.
By implementing these energy-saving tips, you’ll be better prepared for winter and can enjoy a comfortable home while keeping your energy costs in check.
